     The Problem

Our young people are crying out for help, for solutions to their problems and answers to their questions about life. There are serious youth problems affecting our schools and our society overall. Could we have imagined that America would see senseless murders committed by children all across our nation? These shocking and disturbing acts serve as a national wake-up call. As we look at young people's home

lives, the school enviroment, and our culture in general, it becomes clear that our present situation is the result of an abandonment of moral education during the past several decades. Researchers brought this point home when they compared the trends of an earlier generation with today's youthful generation.

The Solution Goto top

Human nature does not automatically grow in the direction of goodness; rather it must be properly cultivated and guided. To realize the hope of the new millennium, we must help our young people to become individuals of conscience and heart. Our standard of morality defines our character, and our character reflects our morality. It is necessary to develop good character in every aspect of our lives - within the family, school, and social environment, in order to realize our fullest potential. The new focus on character education in the United States and in other countries holds a great deal of promise for our future. Since many high quality programs and resources already exist in the field of character education, what makes the approach of The All About Character Project so unique?

Our Philosophy Goto top

At present, the character education movement lacks a comprehensive philosophical base. The failure of the educational system to deal with the anchoring questions of life's purpose and meaning has resulted in tremendous confusion, hopelessness and excessive materialism. One of the essential purposes of education is to point out to young people the ways by which they can live a fulfilled life and achieve lasting happiness. Therefore, character education should help youth identify the aspects of life that are truly important and show them what it looks like in their real lives.

The approach of The All About Character Project contains a theoretical basis as well as practical experience, always coming back to the theme of a life well lived. Rather than emphasize a random list of values, our materials and programs are built upon a moral vision and framework of life's essential goals. There are certain non-physical, non-material priorities, the fulfillment of which, are essential for becoming a person of good character.

Essential Life Goals Goto top

1) Maturity of character
2) Loving relationships and family
3) Making a contribution to society

These goals are easily grasped by all ages and provide a simple moral compass to make good choices and live an honorable, healthy and fulfilling life. We see that good character is not merely something to have because it is "right". Good character is the key to human happiness.Values are void of meaning if they are disconnected from a conception of one's life purpose. Thus, the content of character education is more penetrating and effective when it is set within the context of the essential life goals - it simply makes more sense, and answers both the how and why questions about life.

Our Purpose Goto top

The All About Character Project is offered as an antidote to a culture of extreme self-centeredness, family disintegration, and loss of direction, while at the same time, instilling values that promote inter-racial, inter-religious and international cooperation. Therefore, character education is not merely a personal issue. Character education is part of the larger picture of human development, with implications for the public welfare, and even our global well-being. We are confident that our work is helping to restore harmony, integrity, and order to our troubled families, nation and world through promoting an education of the person of good character.
